  • Thankyou for your interest in joining BATLAS!

The map below shows the current uptake (coloured squares), please click this map to view a larger google maps version which will help you find an available square.

This feature is best viewed from a large device (tablet, laptop or PC) and requires an up-to-date version of Chrome or Firefox, if it fails you can try this basic version or this more detailed map (takes a while to load). You can also use Grid Reference Ireland - zoom in, click on a point and the resulting "tetrad" on the right (without the final letter) is the square - eg M89. There is an instructional video here to guide you through the process (skip to 4:04).

    Please note*
    * The BATLAS survey is best suited to volunteers with existing basic skills in bat surveying with detectors. If you are just starting out and would like to help conserve bats by joining one of our survey schemes, we recommend beginning with the Daubenton's Bat Waterway Survey.
    * To be covered by our insurance, before you register for BATLAS you must first sign up either as a Paid Full Member, or for free Temporary Membership.

  • Select the county or counties where you wish to survey bats. Choose as many as you like, but please be aware that each square takes 80mins plus travel time between 8 survey points within the 10km square. Squares that cross county borders will only be listed in one county so, if in doubt, select both border counties to see if that square is available. Squares listed below in red have been assigned already, those with selectable tick-boxes are available.
