Bat Rescue

May 25, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

An introduction to the role of bat rehabber, whats involved and how much work goes into saving these precious animals – This Event has been postponed to a later date TBC.

Limerick Bat Group with Bat Rehabilitation Ireland are running this introduction to bat rescue. This event will appeal to those nature lovers who are interested in being involved in batMay be an image of standing and outdoors
rehabilitation either from the rescue, transport or care perspectives. This will also interest those who are interested in wildlife rehabilitation in general, or just those who want to see bats in the hand or in a flight cage (possibly) through zoom.

During this event, Susan Kirwan (Bat Rehabilitation Ireland and Limerick Bat Group committee member) will take nature lovers on a zoom tour of the Bat Hospital that she runs in County Limerick. Susan will talk visitors through the process of taking in a bat, where they come from and the sort of injuries that she deals with. She will talk about the process that she went through to become a bat rehabber, the kind of work that is involved on a daily basis and the amount of hard work that goes into making sure that the bats get the best possible care before heading back into the world. Susan will also discuss the bats that don’t make it and when and how she has to make the decision to let them go. During the talk Susan will show participants around the bat hospital, show them the tools that she uses and any bats that are in her care that won’t be distressed by being handled at that time. Susan will demonstrate basic bat hygiene and following on from this, where to go and who to contact about getting involved. Susan will also show participants her flight cage and talk about how important it is that bats are flown before being released. She will also mention any special projects or interests she has in bats.

This event will be hosted by Tanya Slattery of Limerick Bat Group, who will manage the Q & A session.

Please note that there may be discussion or imagery of injuries to bats including showing the damage that cats can do to bats. The topic of death may also be discussed. While this will be done in as sensitive a manner as possible, it may upset some attendees, particularly cat lovers.

This event is free and will be held as part of Biodiversity Week 2021.
