Discover Bats at Donegal Castle

We have teamed up with Donegal Castle to bring you a very special event to celebrate Heritage Week 2025!
In the very heart of Donegal town, towering over the River Eske, stands Donegal Castle. Most visitors will explore this historic castle during the daytime but few will have had the opportunity to explore it after dark.
We will start our nocturnal adventure inside the castle where you will enjoy refreshments and young bat enthusiasts will create their own clay bat, we will deliver a bat talk and you can test your bat knowledge in our quiz.
At sunset, we will begin our walk with special bat detecting equipment so that you can ‘hear’ the bats as we walk around the castle grounds and along the River Eske.
THIS IS A FREE EVENT!
National Heritage Week celebrates Ireland’s cultural, built and natural heritage.
It brings together volunteers, community groups and heritage enthusiasts to share their experience, knowledge culture and practices.
This year’s theme is ‘Exploring Our Foundations’ and invites us to delve into the building blocks of our heritage; not just the structures, but the landscapes and cultural activities that have shaped us. What better place to do this than at an historic Irish castle looking for the world’s only flying mammal!
