SUMMARY:Bat Tree Roost Identification & Endoscope Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop introduces the use of endoscopes in the identification of bat roosts in trees. The course will entail morning lectures followed by two afternoons of fieldwork in the beautiful forested surroundings of Birr Castle demesne and Charleville Estate (Tullamore). This workshop is aimed at ecology professionals\, arborists and experienced amateur bat workers. \nLectures will be based at the Education Room in Birr Castle and will include an introduction to Irish bats as well as hands-on identification using preserved specimens. Other lectures and practical sessions will cover the use of endoscopes and tips on how to identify bat roosts in trees. \nThe workshop will be led by John Curtin and Chris Peppiatt\, two of Bat Conservation Ireland’s Council members\, who have been working on bats and endoscopy of tree roosts for many years. \nA certificate of attendance will be provided. \nFee includes coffee and tea breaks and one evening meal on Wednesday 27th March. Lunches and accommodation are not included\, attendees are requested to bring packed lunches on both days. Participants are asked to bring their own endoscopes if they have the use of one\, a limited number of endoscopes will be available to share during the workshop. \nFor more details contact us at info@batconservationireland.org

DESCRIPTION:Bat Conservation Ireland needs YOU to survey your local waterway for bats! This survey is a great introduction to Ireland’s nocturnal wildlife. To join the survey please come along on one of our FREE evening training courses in July. \nTraining involves an indoor presentation for about one hour\, followed by an outdoor survey to identify Daubenton’s bat in flight. \nNo prior bat survey experience is necessary\, just plenty of enthusiasm. \nPlease wear sturdy footwear\, outdoor clothing. Bring a torch and a bat detector if you have one\, but we can lend you a bat detector if you don’t. \nBATLAS 2020 surveyors are welcome to attend the whole evening course or just the field survey element (which will take place approximately one hour after the listed start time). \nThe All-Ireland Daubenton’s Waterways Survey is funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Northern Ireland Environment Agency. \nFor more information on this event or to register your interest please email info@batconservationireland.org

SUMMARY:Bat Detector Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an overnight training course in the beautiful surroundings of Fancroft Mill\, Roscrea\, Tipperary. This workshop is designed to introduce you to the acoustic world of bats. It is aimed at anyone who would like to up-skill their bat identification using bat detectors. We will focus on the use of heterodyne (tuneable) detectors but will also introduce full spectrum detectors\, sonogram analysis and bat surveying techniques. \nThe training course will consist of illustrated lectures from 12 noon on Saturday. Field work will follow from Saturday evening. We will be detecting\, surveying and identifying bats in flight in the unique grounds of Fancroft Mill. Field work will take place at dusk and again at  dawn. Field work will not include handling bats. We will conclude with a summary of our results at 11am on Sunday morning. \nThe course fee covers all materials for the course\, tea/coffee (during lectures) and evening meal (Saturday night). The fee does not include accommodation. We recommend that you bring your own bat detector but we will have a number of models available on the day for you to try out.
