SUMMARY:Thursday Talks - Bats and Bugs: Project Findings
DESCRIPTION:As part of Bat Conservation Ireland’s ‘Thursday Talks’ series 2023\, James Nolan B.Sc. M.Sc. from UCD’s Batlab will present key findings of the Bats and Bugs project. James carried out DNA analysis of bat droppings that were sent in by citizen scientists from roosts all across Ireland. In this talk\, James will describe what kinds of bats were present and what those bats had been eating. This work broadens our understanding of the ecosystem services bats provide in Ireland in terms of consumption of pest insects. It also opens up new possibilities for using bat dropping samples as indicators of environmental quality. The Bats and Bugs project was funded by the Community Foundation Ireland and National Parks and Wildlife Service. \nThis free webinar is open to all\, however you must register a place.  It is being held as part of Biodiversity Week 2023. \n

To attend this workshop you are not expected to have any prior knowledge of bats or biodiversity. \n \nThe seminar will include: \nA short introduction to Irish bats by Dr Niamh Roche of Bat Conservation Ireland. Niamh co-ordinates a number of Irish bat monitoring schemes and recently co-authored an Identification Guide to Ireland’s Bats. \nA presentation from Dr Tina Aughney\, also of Bat Conservation Ireland\, who has worked on many heritage sites with bats. For this talk she will describe the steps taken to protect bats at a stone bridge that required structural strengthening works\, as well as her experiences at other heritage sites. \n  \nFergal McNamara of 7LArchitects is an RIAI Grade 1 Conservation Architect who has been involved in restoration works on heritage sites with bats. Fergal will detail his experiences of working on a Norman tower house site\, which is also a bat roost\, in County Galway. \nThe workshop will finish up with a 20 minute\, participant-led\, open discussion session with the expert panel. \nWhat this workshop will achieve: Participants will learn more about ensuring bat species are protected at heritage sites when works are required. This will help any planned works remain in compliance with the wildlife legislation. \nMembers of the Irish Planning Institute will be entitled to 2 CPD points for attending this workshop. \nThis workshop is funded by The Heritage Council and is free for participants to attend. \nA zoom link will be sent to registered participants in advance of the event. \n

SUMMARY:Thursday Talk - Rice farmers that got along with soprano pipistrelles: a nice story of a friendship

SUMMARY:Bats in your Back Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join bat expert Dr Tina Aughney for this online\, virtual experience as she goes through a presentation and videos of bats in her garden in Co. Cavan.  Tina will talk you through bats that \n\nDaubenton’s Bat Hunting ©Paul van Hoof \n\n\nare likely to be attracted to your garden; hedgerows\, plants and flowers that are likely to encourage bat activity; and trees\, bat boxes\, eaves and crevices in the surrounds of your garden that are likely to host/encourage bat roosts. \nTina has over 15 years’ experience in running bat conservation monitoring programmes and personally has developed a biodiversity haven in her own garden.  She is committed to preserving native Irish plants and shrubs\, which when under threat from development projects\, find a new home in her back garden.  Her personal biodiversity project in 2020 was to install a pond in her back garden\, which is a great way to encourage bats in your back garden through insect predation. \nThis virtual experience is a free event and it will take place on 22 May 2022\, during Biodiversity Week.  It will be open to the public across Ireland to attend\, as long as they register. \nThis event is free and open to all. It is being held as part of Biodiversity Week 2022. \nYou will need to register for this event.  Please register below and link to participate in the event will be sent to you.
