SUMMARY:Bat walk of St Flannan's Graveyard
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Heritage Week 2024\, and in recognition of Community Heritage Funding received to restore the gates at St Flannan’s Cathedral and Graveyard\, there will be a Bat Walk guided by Anna Collins of Bat Conservation Ireland & Kildare Bat Group on Saturday 24th August at 8.30pm. This event will commence in St Flannan’s Cathedral with a brief talk about the wonder of bats and the equipment we will use to detect them on the walk. It will then progress through St Flannan’s Graveyard and all along the Killaloe Canal\, learning as we go about these fascinating flying mammals\, detecting them with bat detectors and sighting the different species as they go out foraging for the night. This will be a 60+ minute walk over some waterside bumpy terrain at dusk and in darkness\, waterproof walking wear is recommended. It is not suitable for any wheeled modes of transport such as bicycles or scooters as noise from these will be picked up by the bat detectors. The walk is not suitable for young children due to its proximity to the waterside in low light conditions. \nSpaces are limited to 30 persons for more information re booking please email TidyTownsKillaloe@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Bat Walk in Balrath Woods
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate National Heritage Week with Meath County Council at Balrath Woods for a batty evening stroll. \nMeet us at car park in Balrath Woods for a bat chat followed by a moonlit walk through the woodland with bat detectors. \nIrish bats are often associated with woodlands and can be found in wooded habitats throughout the year. Tree roosts can be used in summer for raising young\, in autumn for mating and in winter for hibernating. At night bats may commute through woodlands on their way to foraging grounds or may use woodlands for foraging in. This makes woodland habitats like Balrath important ecological corridors for bats. \nSo come along to Balrath Woods to learn about and possibly see (and hear!) the bats of woodland habitats in Ireland. \nBooking is essential as places are limited. \nTo book free tickets see \nhttps://buytickets.at/batconservationireland/1349275 \nFor directions to the location visit: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Balrath+Woods/@53.6172371\,-6.5090767\,517m \nThis National Heritage Week event has been organised by Bat Conservation with support and funding from Meath County Council and National Parks and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund (LBAF). See https://www.heritageweek.ie/ for more Heritage Week events in the County. \n\n\nIMPORTANT PLEASE READ: \nThis is a free event. \nPlease bring a torch and wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear. \nEvent is suitable for ages 7+ \nAll children must be accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian at all times. \nEvent is weather dependent and may have to be rescheduled if there is heavy rain or high winds. \n
