Brandt's bat Myotis brandtii

This species is very similar to the whiskered bat so it is possible that the two have been confused in the past. This species is very rare and has only been confirmed from five locations in Ireland to-date (Spring 2006). On the continent it is considered a forest bat and is less associated with human settlements than the whiskered bat. It often hunts over water and in forest. Its roosting and foraging preferences in Ireland are unknown.
